California’s year-round sunshine, combined with a terrain that takes in everything from towering mountains to deep valleys, has contributed to wine-growing conditions that are among the best in the world.
California’s micro-climates help to cultivate almost every type of wine grape and the state has carved a reputation for creating excellent examples of many different types of wine. Some of the most famous are whites made from Californian Cabernet Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay grapes, while Zinfandel is native grape that makes excellent reds.
There are world-class wineries to be found across California and road trips taking in famous wine growing regions are increasingly popular.
The most famous of the wine growing regions is Napa Valley and this shouldn’t be missed on any wine-lover’s itinerary.
It makes sense to set aside time for sightseeing and relaxing in this beautiful part of the world, so don’t attempt to pack too many locations into your trip.
Start by taking Route 12 into Napa Valley itself and head for the Beringer Vineyards, which has been making wonderful wines since 1882. The tasting venue, a fine old mansion, is worth the visit in itself. Don’t miss a chance to take in a tour of the Niebaum-Coppola Estate, owned by movie director turned winemaker extraordinaire Francis Ford Coppola. With plenty of good dining options and budget-friendly lodgings in the area, you’ll be set for the night.
Feeling like a bit of bubbly? Head into Sonoma and follow the Silverado Trail, which runs off Route 128. There’s plenty to taste and to buy here ˆ but, if you’re driving, it goes without saying that you’ll need to go easy on the samples!
Art buffs can check out an impressive collection at the Hess Collection Winery, off Route 29 and the wines here aren’t half bad either.
Route 12 brings you to more superb vineyards ˆ notably the Arrowood Vineyards and Winery and nearby Benziger Winery. Underground caves and caverns add extra excitement value to this family vineyard.
There are good restaurants nearby, so eat well, rest up an in the morning follow Trinity Road, taking in the stunning California countryside as you wind past valleys filled with fruit groves and trickling rivers. You’ll be following the road from just off Route 12 to Route 29, back in the Napa Valley. If you follow 128 to the east, you’ll find Auberge du Soleil, considered to be one of the finest restaurants in California’s wine country. It’s also a hotel, so book a room, enjoy a delicious meal and wash it down with as much wine as you like, knowing you won’t have to be on the road again until morning.
There are connecting flights to Napa Valley Airport from various California hotspots including San Francisco and Los Angeles and at car rental comparison prices you can find the ideal vehicle for your wine country adventure.
